Syringomyelia.

چکیده
Syrinx (Gr. Συρινξ) was a Naiad fresh-water nymph who lived on the cold mountainsides of Arcadia. One day she was amourously pursued by the Greek god Pan, and fleeing from her chaser, she was barred by the river Ladon. She asked for assistance from her Sorores Liquidae (Watery Sisters), who transformed her into a hollow water reed. When the god’s frustrated breath blew over the river, it made a haunting sound. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thenceforth known as syrinx.

Introduction: The differential diagnosis of idiopathic and syringomyelia associated scoliosis is important because corrective surgery for scoliosis associated with syringomyelia prior to management of syringomyelia can be dangerous. There are important imaging indicators for diagnosis of syringomyelia associated with scoliosis. A few of these indicators have been assessed in our study. Methods...
متن کاملSuboccipital craniectomy with or without duraplasty
The best surgical treatment for Chiari malformation is unclear, especially in patients with syringomyelia. We reviewed the records of 16 patients who underwent suboccipital craniectomy at our institution between 2005 and 2008. Of the six patients who did not undergo duraplasty, four showed improvement postoperatively. Two patients without syringomyelia showed improvement postoperatively. Of the...
متن کاملSpontaneous syringomyelia resolution at an adult Chiari type 1 malformation.
We present a 41-year-old man with Chiari type 1 malformation and cervical syringomyelia. Although the tonsillar herniation persisted, his syringomyelia was almost completely resolved during an eleven-year time period without surgery.
متن کاملThe utility of superficial abdominal reflex in the initial diagnosis of scoliosis: a retrospective review of clinical characteristics of scoliosis with syringomyelia
BACKGROUND With increasing use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), underlying syringomyelia is increasingly found in patients with presumed idiopathic scoliosis. To determine the indications for MRI in the differential diagnosis of scoliosis, several clinical characteristics of syringomyelia have been reported. Neurological signs, particularly abnormal superficial abdominal reflex (SAR), are i...
متن کاملSyringomyelia associated with Cervical Spondylosis: A case report
Although cervical spondylosis is an extremely common condition causing spinal cord compression, it is rarely involved in syringomyelia formation. Here we describe a case of syringomyelia associated with cervical spondylosis.
متن کاملConventional and CT metrizamide myelography in Arnold-Chiari I malformation and syringomyelia.
Four normal controls and 26 cases of Arnold-Chiari I malformations and/or syringomyelia were reviewed. The pathologic cases included five isolated Arnold-Chiari I malformations, nine communicating syringomyelia, five idiopathic syringomyelia, four posttraumatic syringomyelia, one syringomyelia with hemangioblastoma, and two postshunt syringomyelia. The objectives of this study were to compare t...
